## Beeyar Prasad: The Lyricist Who Resonated With Kerala’s Soul

Beeyar Prasad, born in 1961 in Mankompu, Alappuzha, emerged as a multifaceted talent in Malayalam literature and cinema. From a young age, he demonstrated a profound affinity for the written word, venturing into poetry and theatre before making his indelible mark on the film industry. His early life in the heart of Kerala deeply influenced his creative voice, which would later echo the region’s traditions and rhythms. An early milestone was scripting the acclaimed children’s film Johny in 1993, which went on to receive the Kerala State Film Award for Best Children’s Film.

His official entry into Malayalam cinema came in 2003 with Priyadarshan’s film Kilichundan Mambazham, for which he penned all the songs, including the memorable ‘Onnaam Kili’. Collaborating with composer Vidyasagar and noted actors like Mohanlal, Prasad swiftly gained recognition for capturing Kerala’s ethos through music and lyrics. His success in Kilichundan Mambazham opened the door for subsequent works in films such as Vettam, The Campus, and Jalolsavam, as well as for hit songs like ‘Keranirakalaadum’ and ‘Kasavinte Thattamittu’. Over his career, Prasad contributed lyrics to over 60 Malayalam films, wrote more than 40 plays—eight of which were professional dramas—and crafted librettos for Kathakali, cementing his versatility.

Beeyar Prasad’s ability to blend literary elegance with cultural sensibility earned him widespread admiration. His contributions did not go unnoticed: his plays won top honors in state drama competitions and his film scripts and lyrics struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. Despite health challenges in his later years, including a kidney transplant and a brain hemorrhage, he remained active until his passing in 2023. The legacy he leaves is one of artistic richness, remembered not only for the songs and scripts but for his role in bringing Kerala’s traditions to new generations.

മങ്കൊമ്പ്, ആലപ്പുഴയില്‍ 1961ല്‍ ജനിച്ച ബീയാർ പ്രസാദ് മലയാള സാഹിത്യവും സിനിമയുമൊക്കെയുള്ള പല മേഖലയിലും തനതായ നിലപാട് സ്ഥാപിച്ച കലാകാരനാണ്. ബാല്യകാലത്തു മുതലേ കവിതയും നാടകവും എഴുതിയിരുന്ന പ്രസാദ്, മലയാള സാംസ്കാരിക സ്വഭാവത്തിന്‍റെ സ്വാധീനം തന്റെ രചനകളിൽ പടർത്താൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു. 1993ല്‍ അദ്ദേഹം രചിച്ച ‘ജോണി’ എന്ന ബാലചിത്രം കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ബാലചിത്ര പുരസ്കാരം നേടുകയും അവിടെ നിന്നും സിനിമാ മേഖലയിലെത്താനുള്ള വഴിയൊരുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

2003ല്‍ പ്രിയദര്‍ശന്‍റെ ‘കിളിച്ചുണ്ടന്‍ മാമ്പഴം’ എന്ന സിനിമയിലൂടെ സിനിമാസാഹിത്യരംഗത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചു. വെദ്യാസാഗറിന്റെ സംഗീതത്തിലിട്ടുതന്നെ എല്ലാ പാട്ടുകളും അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ രചിച്ചു; മോഹൻലാൽ അടക്കമുള്ള വലിയതാരങ്ങളുമായുള്ള ഈ സഹകരണം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ‘വെട്ടം’, ‘ജലോത്സവം’, ‘ദി ക്യാമ്പസ്’ തുടങ്ങിയ സിനിമകളിലും ‘കേരനിറകളാടും’, ‘കസവിന്റെ തട്ടമിട്ടു’ പോലുള്ള ഹിറ്റ്പാട്ടുകളിലും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കഴിവുകൾ തെളിയിച്ചു. എൺപതോളം സിനിമകളിൽ ഗാനം എഴുതിയതോടൊപ്പം 40ലേറെ നാടകങ്ങൾക്കും, കത്തകലിപ്പകൃതികൾക്കും പ്രസാദ് സംഭാവനകൾ നൽകി.

ബീയാർ പ്രസാദ് എഴുതിയ നാടകങ്ങൾ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ വിവിധ മത്സരംകളിൽ വിജയമിളക്കി. അദ്ദേഹം മുരളികാവിസുദ്ധിയോടെ കേരളത്തിന്‍റെ സംസ്കാരം പുതിയ തലമുറയിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുചെന്ന കവി, ഗാനരചയിതാവും നാടകകൃത്തുമായിരുന്നു. 2019ൽ കിഡ്നി ട്രാൻസ്‌പ്ലാന്റ് നടത്തിയതിലും 2022-ൽ ബ്രെയിൻ ഹീമറേജ് ഉണ്ടായതിലും ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഏറെ ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ നേരിട്ടെങ്കിലും കലാരംഗത്ത് സജീവമായിരുന്നു. 2023 ജനുവരി 4ന് അന്തരിച്ച ബീയാർ പ്രസാദ്, കേരള സംഗീതസാഹിത്യ രംഗത്തിന്റെ പകൽപറവയായി ഞങ്ങൾ എന്നും ഓർക്കും.
