S Ramesan Nair: The Poet Lyricist Who Bridged Malayalam and Tamil Worlds
S Ramesan Nair, born on May 3, 1948 in Kumarapuram, Kanyakumari district (now in Tamil Nadu), was an acclaimed Malayalam poet, lyricist, author, and translator whose contributions reshaped the landscape of Malayalam film lyrics and literature. Raised amid a unique blend of Malayalam and Tamil cultures, he developed fluency in both languages, an attribute that would later influence his versatile body of work.
Nair began his professional journey as a sub-editor at the Kerala Bhasha Institute and then as a producer at All India Radio. His literary prowess shone through early, and in 1985, he made a stunning debut as a lyricist with the Malayalam film Pathamudayam. Over the following decades, he wrote lyrics for more than 170 films and is credited with penning around 700 film songs and over 3,000 devotional and classical tracks. Ramesan Nair was also an accomplished translator, notably rendering Tamil classics like Thirukkural and Chilappathikaram into Malayalam. His poems and lyrics, such as Neeyen Kinavo, Oh Priye, Oru Rajamalli Viriyunna Pole, and Ambadippayyukal Meyum, became cultural touchstones in Kerala.
His work garnered numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for overall contribution in 2010, the Vennikkulam Memorial Award, the Asan Prize, and the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2018 for his poetry collection Gurupournami. Through his evocative lyrics and translations, S Ramesan Nair left an indelible mark on Malayalam arts and literature, celebrated for his depth, cultural synthesis, and enduring legacy. He passed away in Ernakulam, Kerala, on June 18, 2021, at the age of 73.
